Solo show ’Night Vision’ at Artspace, Södertörns högskola, Stockholm. February 1 – March 28, 2024. Maria Friberg’s Night Vision consists of a series of portraits of young people in a forest, protected in their hoodies. In a dark time, Night Vision directs attention to the young generation who choose silent resistance and an unwavering loyalty with the earth.
The people in Night Vision are placed in a limited area of primeval forest outside Uppsala. The images evoke associations with 19th-century fairy tales and figures such as those in John Bauer’s rich wizarding world. Art history becomes a fund against which stories about our time appear. Today’s youth possess an inner strength that is about distancing themselves from consumerism and empty entertainment. Sometimes, they seem to think, doing nothing is the best way to achieve change – not to buy anything, not to fly, not to fight in other people’s wars.
Works: Night Vision I, III, IV and V (2019. Maria Friberg is current with the critically acclaimed retrospective Almost there at Thielsa Galleriet (until March 3.) Curated by Annika Öhrner. More info here.
