Maria Friberg (f 1966) är en av de mest uppmärksammade svenska samtidskonstnärerna. Listan över Fribergs internationella separatutställningar är stor och omfattande och hon är bland annat representerad i samlingarna på Moderna Museet i Stockholm, Kiasma Museet för samtidskonst i Helsingfors, The Museum of Fine Arts i Boston och Denver Art Museum.
Commoncause från 2008 är en sju och en halv minut lång video, inspelad i den stora trapphallen i Nationalmuseums byggnad. Trehundra sammetslika runda former rullar likt amorfa bollar nedför marmortrappan. Det dova, dunsande ljudet skapar en känsla av ett flytande pågående. Verket är en undersökning av maktstrukturer och de som marginaliseras eller kastas ut ur samhället på grund av dem. Fribergs konstnärskap kan placeras inom traditionen för kvinnliga konstnärer från 1970-talet som var tvungna att strida mot myten om det manliga geniet och århundraden av uteslutande.

Maria Friberg: Commoncause
Maria Friberg (b.1966) is one of the most acclaimed Swedish artists of today and the list of he solo exhibitions on an international basis is long and her work is inluded in the colections of Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Kiasma, Helsinki, The Museum of Fine Arts Boston and Denver Art Museum.
Commoncause from 2008 is a video with a duration of seven and a half minutes that was filmed on the main staircase at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm. Three hundred velvet-like spherical forms roll like amorphous balls down the imposing stone staircase. The muffled, bouncing sound creates the impression of an on-going flow. The oeuvre is an investigation of power structures and those who are marginalized or cast out of society as a result. In fact, can be placed within the tradition of women artists from the 1970s who had to contend with the myth of male genius and centuries of exclusion.
